Silicone, silicone oil, silicone resin: how they relate, in 3 minutes
Silicone oil, rubber, resin and silane coupling agents sound like four materials, but share one family language.
Remember the common thread
If you remember one thing: silicone oil, rubber and resin all share the 'siloxane' surname. Their backbone is an alternating Si–O–Si chain — inorganic-backbone stability on one side, tunable organic side groups (e.g. methyl) on the other — so they generally combine weatherability, heat resistance, low surface energy and design flexibility.
Family tree: from DMC to four classes
- Silicone oil: linear, lower MW, fluid — lubrication, release, defoaming, care;
- Silicone rubber: high MW, crosslinks to an elastomer — seals, tubing, implants (medical grade);
- Silicone resin: highly branched/crosslinked 3D network — high-temp coatings and insulation;
- Silane coupling agents: bridge inorganic–organic interfaces — adhesion and surface modification.
Why such different forms
Same siloxane, but a more linear chain trends fluid (oil), higher MW with crosslinking becomes an elastomer (rubber), and branched crosslinking into a 3D network becomes a hard resin — structure, crosslinking and MW decide oil vs rubber vs resin.

Are 'silicone' and 'silicone rubber' the same?
Colloquially 'silicone' often means silicone rubber (an organosilicon elastomer); strictly, the family also includes oil and resin, so context matters.
What do they have in common?
All build on the Si–O–Si siloxane backbone, generally weather/heat resistant with low surface energy; they differ in structure, crosslinking and form.
Which is most used in medicine?
Medical-grade silicone rubber (elastomer, platinum-cure, implant-capable) is most common; silicone oil is often a lubricious coating.
