Medical polymers: which biocompatibility tests do you actually need?

First answer: how it contacts
The body is complex and material interaction involves biological, physical and chemical reactions. The first step isn't picking tests but defining contact: intact skin, mucosa, breached tissue, or the blood path, tissue, bone; and whether contact is single, short-term or long-term implantation.
Choose tests by contact class (ISO 10993)
- Contact nature: surface / external-communicating / implant device;
- Duration: limited (≤24h) / prolonged (24h–30d) / long-term (>30d);
- their intersection maps to a required set: e.g. cytotoxicity, sensitization, irritation/intracutaneous; blood-path adds hemolysis/thrombogenicity; implants add implantation response and (as needed) genotoxicity, chronic toxicity.
Why hemocompatibility is separate
In blood, red cells (hemolysis test), white cells (immunity) and platelets (coagulation test) react sensitively to materials; any blood-contacting device must assess hemolysis, coagulation and thrombogenicity.

No. Medical grade helps pass, but biological evaluation per the specific device's contact class is still required.
